Nick Frost looks set to be quite the tough-guy Santa in the latest Doctor Who Christmas special preview clip.

“Last Christmas” will see Peter Capaldi’s Time Lord reunite with his companion Clara, played by Jenna Coleman, after they parted ways in series eight finale, “Death in Heaven”.

In the new 60-second trailer, the duo are battling aliens at a North Pole military base when rainbow Slinkies and flashing robots herald the arrival of Father Christmas, who rocks up on a reindeer superhero style and demands an explanation.

“What seems to be the problem?” Santa asks the disbelieving Doctor. “We don’t want any trouble here.”

Then, as if it could get sillier, he turns off Rudolph’s flashing nose to silence him.

Natalie Gumede and Michael Troughton will also feature in the episode, penned by Steven Moffat, while Strax star Dan Starkey has been cast as new character Ian.

Speculation is rife that the Christmas special will be Coleman’s final appearance as Clara but the actress has so far refused to give anything away.

"If you know I'm in the next series or if you know I'm off, you'll know how the story ends," she said earlier this year.

The Doctor Who Christmas special airs at 6.15pm on 25 December on BBC One.
