From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Nick Frost and Natalie Gumede will star in the Doctor Who Christmas Special, the BBC has announced today.

The pair will be joined by Faye Marsay (Pride, The White Queen, Fresh Meat) and Nathan McMullen (Misfits, Casualty).

No further details about their characters have been released yet, but the BBC has confirmed filming on the Christmas episode is underway in Cardiff.

Frost, an actor and screen writer, has previously appeared in a number of hit film and television roles including Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and Cuban Fury.

He said: “I'm so thrilled to have been asked to guest in the Doctor Who Christmas special, I'm such a fan of the show. The read-through was very difficult for me; I wanted to keep stuffing my fingers into my ears and scream ‘No spoilers!’“

Gumede, who is best known for her role in Coronation Street, was a runner-up in Strictly Come Dancing last year.

Michael Troughton (Breathless, The New Statesman), who has recently returned to acting, will also appear in the special.

He will follow in his father Patrick Troughton’s footsteps, who played the second incarnation of the Doctor.

The Doctor Who Christmas special, written by Steven Moffat, will air on BBC One.
