The English actress starred in last year’s five-part BBC drama as Gemma, a GP who discovers her husband Simon (Bertie Carvel) is cheating on her with a younger woman (Jodie Comer) and plots her calculated revenge.
Jones, who rose to fame on Coronation Street, is keeping tight-lipped on the new storyline but confirmed that “most of the original cast are returning” at Wednesday night’s National Television Awards.
“It’s kind of the next step in Gemma’s life,” she told RadioTimes.com. “I think hopefully when we’ve filmed it and it comes out the audience will find what Mike [Bartlett, creator]’s done with following the divorce very interesting. I don’t think it’s been done before.”
Jones was initially unsure about making another run of Doctor Foster after the first season drew an average of 8.2 million viewers and tied everything up in the dramatic finale.
“Mike said he didn’t want to end it where he had stopped, he wanted to look at how their lives would be affected by the drama of what had happened, but I was a bit reticent at first,” she told TV Times. “It was so successful, I just wondered what the hook would be to keep people coming back to this relationship.
“Then I went out for dinner with Mike and the team and they told me what they had planned. I thought it sounded great, and actually like something we haven't explored in a couple before.“
Filming is not scheduled to begin until September, making a 2016 air date highly unlikely.
