Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Danny Dyer has revealed that he was terrified his wife, Jo, was pranking him when she first asked him out.

The EastEnders star was asked out by Jo when they were 14, but thought she was setting him up for a Stephen King’s Carrie situation (where pigs’ blood was tipped over her head).

The actor made the comments on his podcast, Sorted With the Dyers, which he appears on with his daughter, Love Island star Dani Dyer.

The pair responded to a girl who wanted to know whether a boy at school was interested in her, and recalled their own experiences.

“I was the trampy kid, she was the coolest kid,” Dyer recalled. “I had nothing going for me.”

He recalled that, for three years at school she “didn’t look at me”, but “she must have had some psychic dream and knew I was going to be a success”.

“I thought it was going to be like Carrie, she was going to set me up in some sports hall and tip pig’s blood on me,” he said. “But no, she took me to Pizza Hut. It was amazing.”

He revealed that he ended up walking her home and kissing her in the chute room, where rubbish was dropped by residents in the maisonettes.

“It’s a smelly place, it’s a place full of rats, but me and your mum made it the the most romantic little hovel,” he said.

Dyer married Jo in 2016. They have three children: Dani, 24, Sunnie, 13, and seven-year-old Artie.
