TV viewers in the UK are lamenting the BBC’s decision to replace Match of the Day with repeats of Mrs Brown’s Boys.

After the Premier League announced it was delaying the current football season until 3 April in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, many were left wondering what would be broadcast instead of the highlights show.

With Gary Lineker and his team of BBC pundits out of a job for a few weeks, it was announced that Brendan O’Carroll’s comedy show would be the thing to be shown in Match of the Day‘s 10.25pm time slot.

Many viewers, mainly football fans, were left flummoxed by the BBC’s decision, with one writing on Twitter: Why not consider showing old episodes of MOTD, specifically 1990s and early 2000s, in the usual Saturday slot? Let us marvel at seasons past, players and pundits now retired.”

The tweeter added: “Mrs Brown’s Boys is worse than Covid-19. Have a heart.”

Another wrote: “Talk about putting salt in the wound. The BBC have replaced Match of the Day with Mrs Brown’s Boys.

One tweeter said “this really is an emergency now” upon discovering the scheduling change.

Following the episode of Mrs Brown’s Boys will be the Clint Eastwood film Escape from Alcatraz.

Replacing the Mark Chapman-fronted Match of the Day on Sunday (15 March) will be Sport Relief show The Heat is On followed by Kathryn Bigelow’s action thriller Point Break.

It’s no surprise the BBC chose to repeat Mrs Brown’s Boys considering the comedy show is one of the channel’s most-watched shows every Christmas
