Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

As far as crowdfunded projects go, this one looks particularly awesome.

Starting life a minor project that no company would pic up, Con Man's IndieGoGo page soon had over 46,000 fans contributing $3,124,214 to its production, making it the highest crowdfunded web series ever.

Now, with San Diego Comic Con in full swing, the first trailer for the 12 episode series has dropped online, and for any sci-fi enthusiast it looks hilarious. Watch below.

Starring both Alan Tudyk and Nathan Fillion from Firefly, the series follows Wray Nerely (Tudyk) as he struggles to find work after starring in the cult classic spaceship show Spectrum.

At comic conventions he is flooded by fans wanted his autograph, die-hard fans hoping he will star in a full length movie.

Sound familiar yet? That’s probably because it loosely follows what actually happened to Firefly all those years ago.

For those who don’t know, Firefly was a space-western written by Avengers director Joss Whedon. It was cancelled very soon after airing but quickly built up a strong fan following, with DVD sales going through the roof and eventually a movie, Serenity, being made.

In just the trailer we get a quick look at a few of the guest stars who will feature in the show, including both Seth Green and Whedon. Also set to guest are Firefly stars Gina Torres and Sean Maher, as well as Guadians of the Galaxy director James Gunn, actress Amy Acker and Felicia Day.

You can pre-order the series on Vimeo now.
