From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. Footage of the real-life Charles Manson interview that inspired his scene in the latest season of Mindhunter shows just how much Damon Herriman embodied the cult leader.

The Australian actor appears in an extended sequence in season two of the Netflix drama as Manson comes face to face with FBI criminal profilers Bill Tench (Holt McCallany) and Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff).

Much like someone did with Ed Kemper (Cameron Britton) following the release of the first season, one viewer has now placed the first interview Manson did after being imprisoned alongside Herriman’s scene.

While it doesn’t directly emulate the 60 Minutes Australia interview, it does show that Herriman nailed his actions.

In a bizarre twist, Herriman also played an earlier version of Manson in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which was released in the UK earlier this month.

Based on the book by Mark Olshaker and John E. Douglas, the series is executive produced and co-directed by David Fincher. The show features several serial killers who are based on real-life figures including murderer and necrophiliac Kemper, who ended up aiding the FBI in ways they could never have imagined.

In fact, his insight helped these ‘mindhunters’ profile the traits of other serial killers.

You can watch a series of the interviews with real-life serial killers that inspired several scenes in the show here.

Mindhunter is available to stream on Netflix now. Read our interview with McCallany here.
