Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

As 14 new contestants prepare to enter the Celebrity Big Brother house tonight, it’s time to get to know those expected a little better.

Who? Claire King, actress.

Where do I know that face from? Claire is best known for playing the villainous Kim Tate in Emmerdale and tough governor Karen Betts in Bad Girls, for which she received the TV Quick Award for Best Actress in both 2002 and 2003.

Why Celebrity Big Brother? Claire may want to show us what she is really like. She said: "Pretty much all the roles I’ve ever played, or at least the ones that have made my name, have been hard-bitten man-eaters. I’m the polar opposite of the women I’ve portrayed and incredibly conventional when it comes to love, romance...and marriage. I'm really a very down-to-earth, country girl at heart."

What can we expect in the house? Claire changed her name from "Seed" to "King", due to another actress using the same name. The change was influenced by her love of horse racing (the sport of kings), and her favourite singer, Elvis Presley, so we're hoping for some impersonations of the King of Rock n Roll.

Odds of winning? 16/1

Hosted by Emma Willis, series seven of the hit reality show airs on Channel 5, with viewers promised “countless twists, turns and tough tasks”.

The house has been given a make-over for the new run, but celebrities will not be expecting VIP treatment but, instead, plenty of drama and tension.

Last year’s show was won by Geordie Shore’s Charlotte Crosby, who beat 5ive singer Abz Lowe to the title.
