Caitlyn Jenner is reportedly exploring a run for California governor, according to reports.

According to Axios, who broke the story, Jenner is speaking to political consultants and is being assisted by GOP fundraiser Caroline Wren.

Wren previously worked at Trump Victory, a joint fundraising committee for former President Donald Trump’s 2020 campaign. She also helped organise the rally he addressed immediately before the US Capitol assault on 6 January.

Jenner reportedly met Wren through her work with the American Unity Fund, a GOP nonprofit focused on LGBT+ issues.

Jenner originally gained national attention when she won the 1976 Olympic decathlon. She later became a fixture of reality television on Keeping Up With the Kardashians. In 2015, she publicly announced in Vanity Fair that she had transitioned and shared her chosen name.

This comes in the wake of current California Governor Gavin Newsom facing a possible recall election, launched by Republicans angry about his immigration and tax policies. The effort has gained momentum in recent weeks amid criticism around the Governor’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic.

In 2018, Jenner wrote an op-ed for The Washington Post criticising Trump’s handling of trans issues. “The reality is that the trans community is being relentlessly attacked by this president,” she wrote.

“The leader of our nation has shown no regard for an already marginalised and struggling community. He has ignored our humanity. He has insulted our dignity. He has made trans people into political pawns as he whips up animus against us in an attempt to energise the most right-wing segment of his party, claiming his anti-transgender policies are meant to ‘protect the country’. This is politics at its worst. It is unacceptable, it is upsetting, and it has deeply, personally hurt me.”
