Cake Boss star Buddy Valastro has been taken to hospital after impaling his hand in a freak accident at his personal bowling alley.

Valastro, who has made elaborate cakes modelled to look like alligators, pianos and the Statue of Liberty, was bowling at home with his family when the incident occurred.

The cake maker was attempting to fix the pinsetter after it had malfunctioned and trapped a pin, which led to a “terrible accident”, Valastro’s representative confirmed.

Valastro’s hand became lodged in the mechanism, before the metal rod that manoeuvres the pins into place began impaling his hand repeatedly. Valastro suffered three stabbings to his hand in total.

Valastro’s sons came to their father’s aid, and used a saw to cut through the rod and pull him to safety.

On Instagram, Valastro shared a picture of himself in a hospital bed with his hand raised and in a bandage and cast.

“What do you think of my new accessory?” Valastro asked in a caption. “I was involved in a terrible accident a few days ago.”

It is so far unclear whether Valastro’s injury, which occurred in his right hand, will permanently affect his ability to craft ornate cakes.

Cake Boss began in 2009 and revolves around the edible art cakes made by Valastro and his family at their New Jersey bakery Carlo’s Bake Shop.
