From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. The dog who plays Cheddar in US sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine has died.

Stewart the corgi “peacefully” passed away after enjoying a final day with his owners and sister Stella.

His owners wrote on Instagram: “We went to the beach (his favourite place) where he frolicked in the surf and then enjoyed a picnic lunch of In & Out burgers. We relaxed in the sun and just enjoyed each other’s company.

“Our veterinarian met us there later and Stewart went to sleep peacefully in my arms while listening to the sounds of the ocean. He was a one in a million kind of dog, he was my supaah staah.”

Stewart played a crucial role in several episodes of Brooklyn Nine-Nine as the dog owned by Captain Raymond Holt (Andre Braugher).

He was a useful tool in the unit’s annual Halloween heists and was even the ring bearer at the wedding of Jake (Andy Samberg) and Amy (Melissa Fumero).
