Bridgerton stars were monitored by staff at country homes during filming of the show’s notorious sex scenes to ensure property wasn’t damaged, the series’ director has revealed.

Based on Julia Quinn’s series of historical romance novels set in Regency-era London, Bridgerton has been a huge hit for Netflix since it dropped on Christmas Day, having been watched by 63 million households in its first three weeks alone.

The cast is led by Regé-Jean Page and Phoebe Dynevor, who are involved in several intimate scenes together.

In a new interview with Deadline, director Julie Anne Robinson explained that when filming in country homes “there is far less flexibility than you can ever imagine” as crew cannot move beds or paintings and have to be “quite delicate with the furniture”.

She said: “So in the Duke’s bedroom, which was in Castle Howard, [Dynevor and Page] spent a lot of time in that bed, and there were room monitors in the room when we were doing the sex scenes, and they wouldn’t leave.

"The idea of a closed set is absolutely sacrosanct. But for these room monitors, their jobs were more sacrosanct to them. So they were in the scenes with us.”

Robinson added: “We would be shooting a sex scene and they would say, ‘Can you go easy on the bed, go easy on the bedpost.’”

Bridgerton is currently available to stream on Netflix.
