Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Bradley Wash was seen playfully heckling the presenting duo Ant and Dec after he lost to them in the Best Presenter category at the National Television Awards on Wednesday night (11 September).

The embittered Gladiators host, who was also nominated in the category, was seen attempting to drag the pair off stage as they went to collect their award for the 23rd consecutive year.

The camera then panned to Walsh heckling the pair, as he appeared to shout, ā€œTaking the p***!ā€ at the pair.

Recovering from the tussle, Dec said while collecting the award: ā€œThank you ā€“ itā€™s really hard to put into words just how this feels and what it means to us that you take the time to vote for us.ā€

ā€œHonestly, itā€™s a joy, we know weā€™re not gonna win it one year but itā€™s not tonight, thank God.

ā€œBut thank you to everybody who works with us on our shows, we love you, we wouldnā€™t be here without you guys.ā€

Dec remarked: ā€œIt used to be weā€™d be going out partying and now weā€™re going back to dirty nappies and the school run tomorrow.

ā€œMy girl Isla is six now, she left for school this morning and said ā€˜Good luck, I hope you win the trophyā€™.

ā€œIn fact, she said, ā€˜Take my lip balm, I think itā€™ll be good luckā€™. Isla, it worked! We won!ā€

The pair enjoyed another win earlier in the night, with Iā€™m a Celebrityā€¦Get Me Out of Here! taking home The Bruce Forsyth Entertainment Award. Theyā€™ve maintained their reign over the Best Presenter award since 2001.

Walsh was nominated in the category for his work on the primetime gameshow The Chase, while Alison Hammond was nominated for This Morning, Claudia Winkleman for The Traitors and Stacey Solomon for her house cleanup series Sort Your Life Out.

Elsewhere at the awards, Strictly Come Dancing controversially received the Talent Show award after being hit with its biggest scandal in its 20-year history while former This Morning presenter Holly Willoughby returned to the spotlight to huge applause.

Winners in other categories included The Traitors, Sort Your Life Out, Bridgerton and Mr Bates vs the Post Office.

Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway won Best Authored Documentary for Kate Garraway: Derekā€™s Story, her documentary about her husband Derek Draper, who died in early 2024 aged 56, after years of battling health problems brought on by Covid-19.

Richard Gaddā€™s popular yet controversial Netflix mini-series Baby Reindeer was nominated for both Best New Drama and in the Best Dramatic Performance category for Jessica Gunningā€™s role ā€“ but it lost out on both. The show is nominated for 11 awards at the Emmys on Monday (16 September).
