From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Bill Maher has revealed he didn’t support the idea that Trump should be impeached until recently.
The late-night show host – whose series Real Time with Bill Maher returns in the US this Friday – told Hardball’s Chris Matthews that he now fully endorses the notion, accusing the president of “treason”.
“I hear those words used a lot more, I mean that’s what it is,” Maher said, referencing his links to Russia. “What is it when you plainly are with the people who are not us? Didn’t we see that in Helsinki? Plainly, he was saying, ‘Given the choice, I go with President Putin. President Putin says he didn’t do it, I don’t know why he would.’
"Could you imagine if Bush after 9/11 had stood on the rubble with a bullhorn and said ‘Well, Bin Laden says that he didn’t do it, I don’t know why he would have.’"
He continued: “So I don’t know how we get out of this except by getting him out of office. I wasn’t necessarily for impeachment until recently, but I think you have to go ahead and do it.“
Maher said Trump had a “sick mind,” adding: “There is no difference [to him] between doing what is right for him and for doing what is right for the country. I don’t think he thinks in terms of whether he’s betraying anybody - there’s only what is right and good for Donald Trump.”
recently angered the comic book community after writing a blog post in which he seemingly criticised people for mourning the death of Stan Lee
He later told presenter Larry King: “What I was saying is: A culture that thinks that comic books and comic book movies are profound meditations on the human condition is a dumb f***ing culture. And for people to, like, get mad at that just proves my point.”
