Nicole Kidman accidentally revealed a Big Little Lies spoiler at the HBO show's premiere.

The actor returns as Celeste in the second season alongside Reese Witherspoon, Shailene Woodley, Zoë Kravitz and Laura Dern.

Due to the events of season one, though, it seemed unlikely that Alexander Skarsgård would return as Perry, the abusive husband of Kidman's character who is killed in the finale.

Skarsgård himself fuelled speculation over whether his character would return by refusing to answer one way or the other - and judging by Kidman's comments on a New York panel discussing season two, it's become clear why.

"[Skarsgård] was the most incredible acting partner, and then he came back for season two," Kidman said, with People reporting that Witherspoon motioned to her co-star to stop talking.

Kidman reportedly tried to backtrack, adding: "He has a little bit of a part in the sense of… the basis of… okay, I'll be quiet. He didn’t abandon us. We’ll put it that way."

The new season will pick up were the critically-acclaimed first left off – with the lead characters, now dubbed “the Monterey five”, falling apart after covering up Perry's murder.

Making matters worse is the arrival of Perry’s mother, Mary Louise Wright, played by Meryl Streep.

Big Little Lies is based on the novel by Liane Moriarty. You can watch the trailer for season two here.

The series returns to HBO on 10 June and will be available to watch in the UK on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV soon after.
