Two images of Cumberbatch’s face in various film stills accompanied the words: “Benedict Cumberbatch filming something special for BBC One and BBC Two. More details soon...”
The post received over 8,000 likes and speculation was rife that the Sherlock actor is reprising his role in the hit detective drama.
Others suggested it could be something to do with upcoming Children in Need.
Whatever it is, fans are desperate to find out sooner rather than later. One Facebook user said: “That's all?! You can't leave me with this!!!!”
Anther posted: “Ohh BBC, you tease. It doesn't look like Sherlock, cause of the hair. But if it's worth a tease, it must be something good.”
However, the BBC is keeping schtum. Although sources did confirm to the Radio Times that the images do not show scenes from Doctor Who or The Hollow Crown.
