From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

Ryan Murphy has revealed the monster that will be running wild during the upcoming election-inspired seventh season of American Horror Story.

The showrunner unveiled the creature on his Instagram page - and it gives a sense as to how the current state of US politics has inspired the upcoming batch of episodes.

It may only be a sketch but it seems like this character will fit nicely into the canon of previous American Horror Story monsters including Bloody Face and Twisty the Clown.

The image shows something resembling a clown mixed with an elephant - the animal which symbolises the republican party led by Donald Trump.

Murphy, who has also recently been working on the US series Feud, described the election as a “jumping off point” to something grander.

Currently, AHS veterans Evan Peters and Sarah Paulson - who have appeared in all previous six seasons are the only cast members confirmed to return with Murphy stating the latter won't be playing Hillary Clinton.

He said: “I think people literally think Sarah Paulson is playing Hillary Clinton, and I wanted to clarify that that is not true.

American Horror Story returns this October.
