Across its seven seasons, the show has had a handful of references to films released as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including a cameo from Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury.
However, it wasn’t until the show’s final ever episode that fans truly witnessed just how integral the show is to the overarching continuity of the film series’s world.
The finale saw the characters use time travel in an attempt to protect Jiaying (Dichen Lachman) so that Daisy (Chloe Bennet) would eventually be born in their future.
It soon emerged that their efforts saw them create an entirely new timeline.
As a result, some characters ended up in the original timeline, and a handful of others found themselves trapped in the new one.
How they went about correcting this was via the Quantum Realm.
Casual Marvel fans might have forgotten that this is a dimension in the Multiverse that is only accessible through magical energy, mystical transportation. It was first introduced in Ant-Man and the Wasp.
Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man got stuck in there during Thanos’s destructive finger-snap at the end of Avengers: Infinity War. But it was used again by the surviving Avengers in Endgame to reverse Thanos’s actions and resurrect the characters who had been wiped from existence by Josh Brolin’s villain.
In Agents of SHIELD, Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) used the Quantum Realm to travel to the new timeline. He then created a bubble so the characters trapped there could go back to the original timeline.
Earlier this week, an Avengers actor revealed they were asked by Marvel to return for Endgame despite being killed off in the previous film.
Meanwhile, subtitles for a scene in which the dialogue has been described as “inaudible” seemed to hint at the arrival of a popular X-Men character.
It is unknown when Agents of SHIELD‘s seventh and final season will air in the UK
