Adam Sandler is to create four new original films for Netflix, the online streaming service has announced today.

The comic actor is one of the few screen stars whose movies consistently rank among the most viewed on Netflix across the globe, the company said.

No further details have been released about the films, but it is thought they will all be comedy movies.

The move follows news yesterday that Netflix will release its first original film, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend next year, following the success of its original TV series.

Acclaimed Netflix original series House of Cards and Orange is the New Black were both nominated for Emmy Awards earlier this year.

Sandler began his career as a stand-up comedian and joined Saturday Night Live as a writer and actor in 1990.

He went on to produce, write and star in numerous films, including The Wedding Singer, Big Daddy, Anger Management, 50 First Dates and Grown Ups.

Speaking about the offer, Sander said: “When these fine people came to me with an offer to make four movies for them, I immediately said yes for one reason and one reason only….Netflix rhymes with Wet Chicks. Let the streaming begin!!!!”

Ted Sarandos, Netflix chief content officer, said: “People love Adam’s films on Netflix and often watch them again and again. His appeal spans across viewers of all ages – everybody has a favourite film, everyone has a favourite line – not just in the US but all over the world.”
