Both HBO’s live streaming platform, along with Hulu, crashed in the United States.
The website Down Detector, who monitor outages, reported that HBO GO was having issues at 8:35pm ET (1:35am BST) – just 25 minutes before the season eight premiere was scheduled to begin.
The disturbance seemed to have continued during the episode as fans cursed the New and Old Gods as they struggled to access the episode.
Entertainment Weekly reports that HBO were expecting 16.5 million people to be tuning into Game of Thrones’s long-awaited return.
The reunion-heavy first episode featured a hilarious reference to last season’s controversial Ed Sheeran cameo as well as a terrifying death at the hands of the Night King.
