From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. The next Star Wars trilogy will be directed by the creators of Game of Thrones, Disney has announced.

David Benioff and DB Weiss, who adapted George RR Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire novels to television, had previously been announced as working on an instalment in the Star Wars franchise.

Disney CEO Bob Iger has since confirmed that the forthcoming Star Wars release, set for release December 2022, will be directed by the duo.

Speaking at an event in New York, Iger declined to give further details. The film will mark the first part in a new trilogy, with the next two films coming Dember 2024 and December 2026.

Disney previously announced that Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson was working on a trilogy of films. When these will be released remains unclear.

Both the Game of Thrones showrunners' and Johnson's films are expected to be completely separate from the Skywalker saga, the final part of which will be JJ Abrams's The Rise of Skywalker.

While Benioff and Weiss have been broadly praised for their stewardship of Game of Thrones, the latest season of the HBO show has been divisive. While some critics have loved the action pieces, others have criticised the pacing and character arcs.
