While Game of Thrones has come to end, there are plenty more Westeros based television shows to come. Three prequel series have been confirmed to be in development, with a pilot written by Jane Goldman being shot this June.
The events of that pilot will take place thousands of years before Game of Thrones. However, considering how Arya Stark ended the main series sailing west of Westeros, many fans are eager for HBO to develop a sequel.
The network's programming president Casey Bloys has since spoken about the chances of a sequel featuring characters from the series.
"Nope, nope, nope. No," he told The Hollywood Reporter. " Part of it is, I do want this show — this Game of Thrones, Dan [Weiss] and David [Benioff]'s show — to be its own thing.
"I don't want to take characters from this world that they did beautifully and put them off into another world with someone else creating it. I want to let it be the artistic piece they've got. That's one of the reasons why I'm not trying to do the same show over.
"[A Song of Ice and Fire author] George [RR Martin] has a massive, massive world; there are so many ways in. That's why we're trying to do things that feel distinct — and to not try and redo the same show. That's probably one of the reasons why, right now, a sequel or picking up any of the other characters doesn't make sense for us."
The final season of Game of Thrones received a mixed reaction. The Independent’s critic called the finale “misjudged and hammy”, and criticised the episode for “lacking emotional resolution”. Emilia Clarke, whose character Daenerys finally perished during the episode, has said “it was a f***ing struggle reading the scripts” but that the character’s final moments were “very taken care of… it’s a very beautiful and touching ending”.
