From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.HBO has responded to a fan petition that demanded the network reshoot the entire final season of Game of Thrones.
The petition was published even before the final episode of the eighth series had aired, and blamed its perceived lack in quality on David Benioff and DB Weiss’s writing skills.
“David Benioff and DB Weiss have proven themselves to be woefully incompetent writers when they have no source material (i.e. the books) to fall back on,” the petition read, referring to the original books by George RR Martin.
“This series deserves a final season that makes sense.”
A number of Game of Thrones stars weighed in on the negative reaction to the final series. Sansa Stark actor Sophie Turner branded, the petition “disrespectful”, while Kit Harington (Jon Snow) said anyone complaining could “go f*** themselves”.
HBO president Casey Bloys has finally had his say, during the Television Critics Association summer press tour.
“There are very, very few downsides to having a hugely popular show,” he began, via TVLine.
“But one I can think of is when you try to end it, many people have big opinions on how these characters’ stories should come to an end.”
Bloys added that reshooting season 8 was “not something we seriously considered”.
He then pointed out that, while fans may have taken issue with various aspects of the plot, the final season has done very well at the Emmy nominations, which were announced last week.
“Thirty-two Emmy nominations is certainly nice validation,” Bloys said.
