With just two episodes left before the HBO shows reaches its climax, showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss killed off yet another character.
This time, it was Missandei’s turn to die. The character, first introduced in season three as a slave who was later freed by Daenerys, was played by British star Nathalie Emmanuel, who praised her death scene as “fantastic”.
The moment in question arrived after she was taken prisoner by Euron Greyjoy and Cersei Lannister shortly after arriving in King’s Landing.
With Dany and her lover Grey Worm (Jacob Anderson, who has described the twist as "heartbreaking") watching on, Missandei has her head chopped off by The Mountain – not before shouting her final word: “Dracarys.”
“I thought it was a fantastic scene,” Emmanuel told Entertainment Weekly. “I’ve said in so many interviews that I don’t mind if I die; I’m just happy to be here and be a part of the show. But I just wanted it to be really cool and a moment that people remember and I feel like they really give me that moment. I’m so happy that she has that kind of exit.”
She added that Missandei’s death will ”push Daenerys to a scary level.“
Emmanuel also revealed her one big regret was not getting to do any fight scenes.
“There’s a part of me that’s a little sad Missandei didn’t throw down in the battle,“ she said. “I would have loved to see [her] fighting.”
The latest episode featured a scene involving Brienne of Tarth that have prompted fans to accuse the episode’s writers – showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss – of “hitting new lows”
The show will be available on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV in the UK.
