It's taken a while for me to freely admit it, but I love Star Trek and Dr Spock (my sons and I once met him at a premiere!) and Arthur C Clarke and Battlestar Galactica and all the rest. They're epic tales of heroism and adventure – I often think I first got a taste for that sort of literature when I won Roger Lancelyn Green's Tales of the Greek Heroes as a prize at school.
My father was a scientist and I really admire some of the incredible technological leaps made in science fiction – satellite communication, moon suits... I long to travel into space – the moment it becomes possible I'm signing up, even if it means mortgaging myself up to the hilt.
