The Song of Ice and Fire author was put in the hot seat by Amy Poehler, who challenged Martin to name which character said what.
Aside from showing off his in-depth knowledge about Westeros (although the Winterfell maths tutor Mrs Puddlefinch did slip his mind), the Father Christmas-like author also displayed an adorable laugh on Seth Meyer’s late-night show.
The 66-year-old did well, but could not identify exactly which character said “Winter is Coming”.
“Those are the words from House Stark, half of the people in the book say that,” he said, before Poehler reminded him: “No, those are the words from the Westeros nine meteorologist Breeze Daniels.”
The quick-fire question and answer session quickly descended into a joke, with Meyers telling Martin the line “well, that’s what you get for not inviting me” was said by Robb Stark’s aunt Patty after she heard about the red wedding.
Martin looked alarmed when he was unable to answer the final question, “it’s hot in here, mind if I take my top off”, earnestly telling the hosts “I don’t know”.
Poehler reassured him with the inevitable answer “we would literally accept any Game of Thrones character”.
Martin appeared on the show to promote his new book, The World of Ice and Fire: The Untold History of Westeros and the Game of Thrones, a companion guide to his fictional kingdom.
