Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Roald Dahl’s Esio Trot

6.30pm, BBC1

Roald Dahl’s 1990 tale of late-flowering love is not generally considered one of the children’s author’s greatest, but Dustin Hoffman and Dame Judi Dench bring serious star-power to this adaptation. Hoffman plays shy old bachelor Mr Hoppy, who develops a cunning plan to win over a tortoise-loving neighbour (Dench).

Miranda

8pm, BBC1

So, will it be Gary, Mike or neither, as Miranda Hart wraps up her slapstick sitcom for good?

Wallander Faceless Killers

9pm & 9.55pm, BBC4

The concluding brace of these “Swedish Wallander” episodes from 1994, starring Rolf Lassgård as the Ystad detective. The victims’ funeral provides a breakthrough when the snooper in the barn is recognised as Mrs Lovgren’s brother...

Mrs Brown’s Boys

9.35pm, BBC1

A spate of local burglaries prompts Agnes to increase her home security, fitting a bolt to the back door – yes, the one that sees the to’ing and fro’ing of characters.

White Dee: What’s All The Fuss About?

9.35pm, Channel 5

Having made a good impression on Celebrity Big Brother, Dee Kelly, the star of Channel 4’s Benefits Street, is followed in her new life of public appearances, photo-shoots, newspaper interviews and an appearance at the Conservative Party conference.

The Clash: New Year’s Day ’77

10.45pm & 2.45am, BBC4

A documentary featuring previously unseen footage of the Clash in concert at The Roxy club in Covent Garden on 1 January 1977. Filmed by Julien Temple (The Great Rock’n’Roll Swindle), the recording offers a fascinating insight into Britain during the late Seventies.
