From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

As Friends marks its 20th anniversary today, we look back at some of the show’s best moments as chosen by you.

Over the past month we’ve been asking readers to nominate their favourite moments from the sitcom on Twitter and Facebook.

Aside from inevitable responses we received such as “when the series finally ended”, scenes involving Ross were the most popular, with his sandwich, sofa, leather trousers and ‘unagi’ incidents all making the cut.

Other moments are not so much single defining scenes, but enduring phrases that have made the show one of the most popular TV sitcoms to date.

Take a nostalgic look back and see if you can remember them all.

Best moments from Friends

PIVOT!

Ross finds himself getting more stressed than usual when Rachel and Chandler fail to help him get a new sofa up to his apartment. Despite his best vocal efforts, he concedes it probably won’t PIVOT anymore.

Ross’s Sandwich

Ross’s boss decides to eat his sandwich, a special turkey treat made by Monica with a gravy-soaked middle moist maker and THE ONLY GOOD THING IN HIS LIFE.

Seven!

Chandler is stupefied to find a woman has seven erogenous zones, but Monica is only too keen to demonstrate. It turns out Chandler has been rushing to number seven a little too soon. In the words of Rachel: “If you go to Disneyland, you don’t spend the whole day on the Matterhorn.”

We were on a break!

The single refrain that runs throughout the whole series is one of the most memorable lines from the show. Ross never manages to live down his affair with the girl from the coffee shop, but it’s not technically cheating if you’re on a break, right?

The apartment swap

Monica and Rachel are forced to swap apartments with Joey and Chandler after losing a quiz over a key question about what Chandler’s job is. If only any of us knew what Chandler’s job really was.

Ross’s leather trousers

The one where Ross struggles to get his leather trousers back on and ends up hitting himself in the face with a concoction of talcum powder and baby lotion.

I’m Chandler, could I BE wearing any more clothes?

In a rare moment, Joey shows some wit – in a catch phrase stolen from Chandler, of course.

Unagi

“Unagi is a state of total awareness. It’s not something you are, it’s something you have.”

‘Oh My God’

Janice’s nasal New York accent doesn’t stop ringing loud throughout the series, even when Rachel is about to give birth in hospital.

Monica’s hair

Monica’s hair suffers on a group trip to Barbados and to make things worse, she loses to Mike at ping pong. She later opts for some fetching braids that get caught in the shower. Monica also experiences hair woe in series two when Phoebe gives her a haircut like Dudley Moore rather than Demi Moore.
