Tintin: the department store
Things to do, places to go this weekend
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Tintin, he of the cute quiff and plus fours, made his debut on 10 January 1929. Some 66 years and 24 adventures later, the fearless boy reporter is an icon the world over. Tintin's creator Herge had little inkling that by the time of his death in 1983, his most famous creation would have been translated into 51 languages and sold 200 million books worldwide. Move over Captain Haddock, Bianca Castafiore and Rastapopoulos, Tintin's worth more than all of you put together. At his death Herge decreed that no more Tintin adventures were to be written, but this didn't stop the estate falling into the hands of hungry accountants. So, with no more books to exploit, how about Tintin mugs, or Tintin duvet covers, or even Tintin carpets (left). Following the success of the first Tintin store, which opened in Covent Garden in 1984, Tintin has now become the face to launch a thousand products. Saturday sees the opening of the world's eighth shop. The new store in London's swanky Sloane Avenue takes Tintin to new consumer heights: it's the first Tintin department store. The first book published was Tintin in the Land of the Soviets: Tintin is now very definitely in the land of the capitalists.
60 Sloane Avenue, London SW3 opens today
