Theatre Mr Puntila and his man Matti
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. After taking the Edinburgh Festival by storm and enjoying a sell- out run in London in October, Mr Puntila and His Man Matti (right) now looks like one of the shows of 1998. If not the show. Lee Hall's jaunty new version of Brecht's 1940 satire on the class system is directed by theatre de complicite's Kathryn Hunter. The production has further enhanced the glowing reputation of both the Almeida theatre and the right size, whose extraordinary double-act skills provided the impetus for the revival. This time last year, Hamish McColl and Sean Foley hit the West End with their wondrous two-men-in-a-bathroom lark, Do You Come Here Often?. Now these soon-to-be TV stars have again gamely agreed to give up most of their Christmas resuming the lead roles of the drunken landowner Puntila and his put-upon chauffeur Matti for 20 performances. It's physical, it's funny, it's certainly not festive. Get dialing.
