The Devil's Larder, Grid Iron at Debenhams
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Directed by Ben Harrison, a series of often-sinister scenes, of variable quality and with no narrative other than the theme of food, is played out in appropriate corners. Those include a dim stairwell, a book-lined boardroom and, in the case of the honeymooning wife, a bed at the entrance to the Wedding Service department. A mannequin moves here; a shop assistant stirs to life there; a ghostly figure glides up an escalator.
The versatile cast of four transform themselves into the ghastly "Caledonian community charity challenge" team and then make up a Sixties fondue party, their passions simmering as cheesily as the main dish. Elderly people are masked and voiceless, one encountering a dead loved one in a most surprising way, another providing scientific fodder for a young doctor - which may put you off Jerusalem artichokes. Four skeletons make their way along "the punishing path" to a restaurant where they cross the barriers of taste in devilish style.
Evocative music, including clarsach and voice, accompanies this material, which - though never indigestible - may not be to everyone's taste.
