Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

The National Theatre has announced the latest shows to be streamed on YouTube as part of its lockdown programming.

A Streetcar Named Desire starring Sex Education’s Gillian Anderson will be broadcast on 21 May, with the Vanessa Kirby (The Crown) co-starring in the Young Vic’s 2014 production.

Tom Hiddleston’s 2013 performance of Coriolanus from the Donmar Warehouse will stream two weeks later on 4 June.

Also heading to the National Theatre’s YouTube channel is a previously unseen recording of Barber Shop Chronicles, which will broadcast on 14 May, followed by political comedy This House on 28 May.

All productions are screened at 7pm, with the recordings available on demand for the following seven days.

Launched in April, the National Theatre Live at Home programme has kept theatre fans entertained during coronavirus lockdown by streaming full length productions for free while suggesting viewers donate to the National or their own local theatres.

Productions including Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller’s Frankenstein and Tamsin Grieg’s Twelfth Night have been broadcast in the past month.
