The pair are set to star in Lungs at the Old Vic, a two-character play written by Duncan Macmillan. It follows a couple named only M and W, who reflect on the moral implications of having children in today’s world, where political chaos and climate change disaster loom.
Foy made her stage debut at London’s Royal National Theatre in 2008, in Paul Miller’s DNA and The Miracle. Smith, meanwhile, is known for his lead role in the musical version of American Psycho, staged at the Almeida in 2013. He also starred across from Christian Slater in the stage adaptation of Swimming with Sharks.
Foy and Smith starred as Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip in the first two seasons of The Crown, with Olivia Colman and Tobias Menzies taking over the roles for the third and fourth season.
Lungs originally premiered at the Studio Theatre in New York in 2011, with its first UK performance taking place in 2013, starring Kate O’Flynn and Alistair Cope.
The new season at the Old Vic will also include Samuel Beckett’s Endgame and Rough for Theatre II, starring Alan Cumming and Daniel Radcliffe, alongside a musical adaptation of the 1983 film Local Hero.
