Keira Knightley is to make her Broadway debut next year in a stage version of the famous French novel Therese Raquin.

The actress will take on the title role, playing a young woman trapped in a loveless marriage who has an affair with one of her husband’s friends.

Described as a tale of “love, lust, betrayal and guilt”, the Roundabout Theatre Company production will open in New York in October next year.

The 29-year-old made her West End debut in The Misanthrope in 2009, and has most recently appeared in The Children’s Hour, both staged at The Harold Pinter Theatre.

The actress recently starred alongside Benedict Cumberbatch in The Imitation Game, a film that follows Alan Turing’s attempt to break the Enigma code during World War II.

The movie debuted at the London Film Festival last month and sees Knightley playing Turin’s fellow code-breaker and fiancée Joan Clarke.

Knightley is also due to star in the forthcoming film Everest next year, about a climbing expedition that is devastated by a severe snow storm.

Therese Raquin begins previews on 1 October and has its opening night on 29 October at a Broadway theatre that is yet to be announced.
