From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The Twilight actor Charlie Bewley, 30, who plays red-eyed vampire Demetri in the romantic saga makes his stage debut with his sister. Lydia Rose Bewley, 26, who made her screen debut in The Inbetweeners Movie this summer is now to star with him as his stage sibling in The River Line.

Charles Morgan's wartime drama, which he originally wrote as a novel in 1949 before adapting it for the stage, tells the story of allied pilots in occupied France in 1943, hiding from the Nazis. They are trying to escape to the Pyrenees, along the escape route known as the River Line.

"Until now I've never had a chance to really explore a character," says Charlie. "The process of character development is much more authentic in theatre."

He plays Major John Lang who finds spiritual peace amid the chaos that surrounds him. Although he never shares the stage with his real-life sister, their characters are profoundly linked in the play.

Bewley says his role as vampire Demetri gets meatier in the final Twilight instalment, Breaking Dawn. But now theatre is where his heart lies, despite his big break in Hollywood.

"Twilight hasn't propelled me to cover-boy status but it has fast tracked my career forward about three years."

'The River Line', Jermyn Street Theatre, London W1 (020 7287 2875) 4 to 29 October
