Play of the Week: Sauce for the Goose, Orange Tree, Richmond
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Farce – with its panic-propelled exits and entrances – should not work in the round. But at the Orange Tree, which has a rich festive tradition of staging the works of Feydeau, they make mincemeat of that notion.
The actors mime the frantic openings and closings, while a stage manager provides the sound effects. It's a deliciously rum procedure and it compounds your pleasure at the escalating mayhem in this blissfully funny Feydeau revival by Sam Walters. The original title is "Le Dindon" ("the turkey") and the fowl play arises from foiled philandering.
The piece is nicely renamed in Peter Meyer's translation to indicate how this is also a story of female revenge against the sexual double standard. Portrayed with captivating wit by Beth Cordingly, Lucienne is a happily married woman who will only succumb to infidelity if presented with proof that her husband has been unfaithful. Walters and his crack cast expertly pace the ensuing lunacy. A treat.
