The Independent Recommends: Edinburgh 98 - Comedy
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.ONCE PART of the astronomically successful (and overhyped) duo, Newman and Baddiel, Rob Newman (right) has returned to the live stage after a three-year absence. A sell-out run in Edinburgh demonstrates pretty conclusively that he has still got what it takes as a live performer. He is particularly strong on bizarrely imaginative routines. For instance, he conjures up the absurd idea of Stephen Hawking meeting the man who provides his artificial voice.

The sweet American stand-up, Arj Barker, winner of last year's Perrier Best Newcomer Award, has a mean way with a one-liner. "I'm in love with a philosopher, and she doesn't even know I exist," he moans. "What's worse, she can prove it." Later, he muses that he's thinking of asking his doctor for a prescription for some medicinal marijuana: "I set my car-keys down, and five minutes later I know exactly where they are."
