Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Christmas shopping in London usually throws up two distinctly different types of experience. If you have hated it in the past, it probably means that you spent a day being pushed and shoved around Oxford Street with its human traffic jams and a selection of shops which hardly differs from any other high street in the country. Those of you who have happier tales have probably spent time scouring London's more unusual shops and areas in search of the quirky, the offbeat and the unique.

To make sure that you become an expert Christmas shopper, use this guide to the best shops in the capital, which has been compiled by London experts Time Out (also look out for its annual Time Out Shopping & Services Guide, which lists thousands of London's shops). Time Out magazine is running two special Christmas shopping editions on 26 November and 3 December, listing even more bright ideas.

With one or two exceptions, the shops listed do not have branches outside London, most specialise in merchandise you won't find elsewhere. As a lot of the stores are staffed by the people who own them, you should also enjoy a high level of service.
