THERE HAVE been numerous recent attempts to re-create the heyday of film noir, but few more successful than LA Confidential (10.15pm Sky Premier). In Curtis Hanson's Oscar-winning evocation of 1950s Los Angeles, Russell Crowe and Guy Pearce play warring cops who are forced to band together when a murder investigation turns really nasty. Top-notch support is provided by Kevin Spacey (right) as a canny cop and Danny DeVito as an insinuating gossip columnist, while Kim Basinger scooped the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for her performance as a high-class call-girl.

Edward Elgar wrote that his moving oratorio The Dream of Gerontius (9pm Performance) was "the best of me". For this performance in St Paul's Cathedral, Sir Andrew Davis conducts the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus.
