Activities include archery, pony trekking, abseiling and climbing. Most holidays are "multi-activity" so children pick and mix exactly what they want to do. 6-18 yrs inc. Camp Beaumont: This American-style organisation runs day camps, residential camps and even camps abroad. British centres are in Norfolk, Surrey, Worcestershire and Shropshire. Some of the more unusual options include a stage and screen camp for aspiring young thesps or the Megachoice holiday where children can try their hand at motorsports and scuba diving. Easter camps runs 29 Mar- 5 April, summer camps every week from 5 July- 23 Aug. Prices range from pounds 245-329 per week.

Superchoice Holidays: Camps are for 7-16-year-olds at the Little Canada and Osmington Bay Centres. The first is an American-style camp with totem pole and log cabins, the latter over-looks the sea. Holiday weeks for both begin on 5 April, 19 and 26 July, and 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30 August. Activities for younger kids include kite-making, karting and trampolining. For older children more specialist weeks include horse, technology and water sport centred activities.

Mill on the Brue: This is one of many well-equipped independent centres. During the summer holidays it runs residential courses for children 8- 14 yrs. Up to 40 children come for a week or two and are placed in groups of 10 with children of their own age. Each group is supervised by trained instructors and has about six activities a day. Open Sun 13 July- 30 August. One week pounds 289.50

Llangollen YHA Centre: Youth hostels are also worth looking at. This centre in the Vale of Llangollen offers summer camps for groups of children from 9-12 yrs and 13-16 yrs. There's a maximum of 48 at each camp but children are split into gangs of 12 for activities, with two trained instructors for each group. Activities include mountain biking, kayaking, gorge walking and a "jungle run". Seven-day courses start 16 and 23 August. pounds 249.
