Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Searching for a sponsor for their production of Lysistrata, Instant Classics came up with Femidom, the innovative female condom. The choice posed a bit of a challenge, however, when it came to product placement since Aristophanes' classic is about women who withdraw their favours. 'The basic principle of the play is that people don't have sex,' David Cottis, the director, says. 'So the only place we could put one was at the end.' Although contraceptives don't feature in the text, Cottis feels their appearance is in keeping with the spirit of the play - 'we're only making specific what was already there' - and the show will favour equality by featuring condoms as well: 'We wanted to mix'n'match,' Cottis says.

'Lysistrata' is at The White Bear, Kennington, London (071-735 8664).

At a press conference today (Wednesday) the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith will unveil its plans to raise pounds 350,000 by next March, the sum needed to wipe out the theatre's deficit. The campaign, entitled 'Keep the Lyric Alive]', takes its cue from the successful battle to save the Young Vic which gained widespread support from the public and the theatre world alike. The Lyric hopes to raise the first pounds 50,000 this month to keep the theatre door's open. Watch this space for details of the campaign.
