Wavves say Donald Trump supporters, racists and homophobes shouldn’t attend their shows
'I'd rather have a room half filled with good energy than one filled with hate’
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. Before Wavves kicks off their summer tour, singer and guitarist Nathan Williams laid out the ground rules for the folks who is welcome to attend the band’s gigs. Those who are unwelcome include: Donald Trump supports, white folks who use racial slurs, homophobes, All Lives Matter supporters, defenders of murderous police officers and the like.
“It’s come to my attention as we gain more notoriety and our music/label begin to grow, there is an inevitable type of person or fan with whom you truly don’t share the same thoughts and opinions as,” Williams said. “This being said, some of that is healthy—I don’t want everyone at my shows to be a clone of each other. However, in light of the constant rape, murder, racism, homophobia and misogyny that goes on. seemingly every day I feel the need to make clear who I personally make music for, and who I don’t.”
Throughout the day, the official Twitter for the Southern California band responded to suggestive messages throughout the day.
"Nobody is perfect (including myself)," Williams added, "but I just know I don't want or need fans who don't get this. In fact, I'd rather have a room half-filled with good energy than one filled with hate."
