The Bonus Track: Lake Street Dive, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Anne Hathaway, Laurel and EELS
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Bad selfies
Four-piece Motown soul group Lake Street Dive are already massive in the US, even making a cameo on House of Cards. With charismatic jazz vocalist Rachael Price in charge, we’re tipping LSD for big things over here when their debut album Bad Self Portraits comes out 5 May and they perform at London’s Bush Hall on 8 May. Watch their joyful cover of Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back” which has clocked up nearly two million views on YouTube
Clap your hands say... where
Quirky indie rockers Clap Your Hands Say Yeah have just announced their fourth album Only Run will be released on 3 June. And in true CYHSY-style, lead singer/songwriter Alec Ounsworth will be performing living room shows across the UK. Check out the band’s Facebook page to nominate your own front room and listen to their new track “Coming Down”
Les Mis in da club
Anne Hathaway rapping is not a sentence we ever thought we’d type, but thankfully the Les Mis star prefers to sing her rap in the style of showtunes. Of course she does. Watch Anne’s version of 50 Cent’s “In Da Club” and Snoop Dogg’s “Gin and Juice”. Probably not one for the “Hatha-haters” out there.
No resting for Laurel
Alt-pop Lana Del Rey sound-alike Laurel releases her debut EP next week. The 19 year-old singer from “a tiny town somewhere between Southampton and Portsmouth” was inspired by the Raymond Carver short story “Why Don’t You Dance With Me” when making her video for “To The Hills”
Next week’s biggie ...
Kevin Harley reviews the much-anticipated eleventh studio album from EELS. The Cautionary Tales of Mark Oliver Everett is out 21 April. Watch the album trailer
