World Music Album: Company Segundo

Duets, Warner Brothers

What do you do with a nonagenarian superstar? The question of how best to employ the talents of Cuban guitarist Segundo has clearly troubled his record label. Despite the contrivance of the duets format, with a bewildering range of guests popping in to do their bit, this remains an enjoyable if rather absurd album. Bafflingly, Lou Bega and Antonio Banderas are on board, along with genuine world music stars such as Cesaria Evora and Silvio Rodriguez. The opening duet with Khaled is great, with Afro-Cuban rhythms and Rai vocals sounding like they were made for each other.
