Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. For this follow-up to Vetiver's acclaimed 2006 album To Find Me Gone, singer Andy Cabic has opted to pay tribute to the artists that helped sculpt his own musical character, with a series of cover versions.
Not for Cabic the familiar litany of famous names, however: apart from the occasional Loudon Wainwright or Townes Van Zandt track, and a version of Hawkwind's "Hurry On Sundown", these songs are drawn largely from songwriters who managed to give fame and fortune a swerve even during their late-Sixties/early-Seventies heyday, such as Garland Jeffreys, Michael Hurley and former Fairport Conventioneer Iain Matthews.
Ronnie Lane's "Roll On Babe" receives a suitably warm, soothing treatment, with gentle organ underpinning guitar arpeggios, while Vetiver's version of Wainwright's "The Swimming Song" is scrupulously faithful to the original's jaunty banjo setting. The general mood of the album recalls The Grateful Dead's spliff-tastic country-rock phase, with banjos, harmonies and fellowship to the fore.
Pick of the album:'The Swimming Song', 'Standin', 'Blue Driver', 'Roll On Babe'
