Album: Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings

No surprises in this follow-up to the excellent Naturally, just more of the same: impeccably authentic-sounding Southern-tinged soul, with the Dap-Kings rhythm and horn sections tight as you like, and Augusta-born Shazza's throaty, sassy vocals riding over the top as if she were soul's own Queen of Sheba. If anything, the funk's heavier than before and there's a Bisto-thickness to the sound, with more than a touch of Allen Toussaint's New Orleans productions. The busy band may be marking time and the short length makes for poor value, but this is still real soul from the source.
