Founder-member Vitous might be remembering Weather Report but he doesn't do any of their tunes, preferring a rather noodly free jazz, a cover of Ornette Coleman's "Lonely Woman" and his own bowed and plucked playing.
The quintet, featuring Michel Portal on bass clarinet, interrogates Vitous's idea of Slavic soul but, unlike his Universal Syncopations albums, everything is dominated by the bass. WR's Live in Tokyo is the one to get.
