Album: John Taylor

Whirlpool (CamJazz)

Pianist John Taylor's trio with bassist Palle Danielsson and drummer Martin France is becoming one of the marvels of the age, fulfilling Rilke's concept of music as "audible landscape" in swinging meanders through a melancholy Pennines of the soul. Listen to the arrangement of "In the Bleak Midwinter" to get the drift, or "I Loves You Porgy", with Danielsson's big bass fiddle singing the melody like Jimmy Blanton. There's also a version of Kenny Wheeler's "Everybody's Song But My Own", and "The Woodcocks", a slow burning response to Jimmy Rowles' "The Peacocks". Danielsson is on spellbinding form.
