RRS is the first solo album in 20 years from Gainsbourg collaborator Vannier, and it's unapologetically vintage in its loose, louche orchestral jazz-funk-rock sound.
Created with veterans of his 1970s sessions, it's immensely filmic: a Wim Wenders soundtrack manqué, perhaps (one theme being the despair of angels in a senseless world). And, throughout, Vannier's half-spoken vocals manage to sound simultaneously weary and surprised. It's quite a trick, but the 67-year-old's had plenty of practice.
