The line separating homage from pastiche is thin in these entertaining – whistle-able, even – nine tunes by trumpeter/composer/bandleader Hague.
Following once fashionable but now neglected hard-bop trumpet-men Kenny Dorham and Lee Morgan, Hague contrasts catchy themes with Kenny Wheeler-esque harmonies to create witty music that's obvious and subtle at the same time.
A great band with Jim Blomfield on piano and Ben Waghorn on sax, excels.
